Growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, Sonji wasn’t sure that she would spend her life making music; but she was sure that making music was her life. As the oldest of six children born into a musical family, Sonji still remembers listening to her parents play and picking up their instruments for the first time.
“The first instrument that I learned to play was my Mother’s flute when I was nine,” recalls Sonji. “After that I moved on to the saxophone and any other instrument that I could find in my school’s band room.” Driven to learn as much as she could about each individual instrument, Sonji spent countless hours and summers locked away in her room discovering what each had to offer.
By the time her fifteenth birthday came around, Sonji was seasoned on the saxophone, trumpet and the piano and had discovered a new love in the guitar. On borrowed guitars she quickly began covering songs from Nirvana to Eric Clapton. Before long she was writing and singing words that she had never expressed. “I was so calm and quiet when I was young and song writing gave me a way to talk to people and make them understand me,” she says.
Ready for a change and determined to jump onto the music scene, Sonji moved to Oakland, CA to pursue her dreams. While working at Starbucks, Sonji quickly found herself involved in the San Francisco music scene. Playing gigs here and there and attracting the attention of LL Cool J. With the help of LL, Sonji recorded a demo with a few of her original songs.
Sonji is continuing to grow as an artist and is looking forward to sharing her music with the world!
